How charter schools compare (Washington DC)

(reposted from Washington Post July 13, 2010)
Scores are just in Tuesday afternoon for D.C. public charter schools. The headline is that secondary schools (middle and high) in the charter sector are well ahead of those in the D.C. Public Schools system. But there is virtually no difference between charter and DCPS elementary scores.
Here's the breakdown from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education
Here are pass rates on the D.C. Comprehensive Assessment System for D.C. Public Schools, under Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee, and for independently operated public charter schools. The results show the percentage of students who reached proficiency or better. The DC-CAS, given in April, is separate from federal testing that compares achievement among states and various cities. Elementary results are drawn from grades 3 through 5, secondary results from grades 6 through 8 and grade 10. DCPS results are in bold.
